Rib-area concerns

Rib and Chest-Wall Pain Evaluation

Pain around the ribs or chest wall can be musculoskeletal, but chest pain can also signal a medical emergency.

Complete Rehab QC screens the history, injury mechanism, breathing symptoms, tenderness, movement, and medical warning signs before deciding whether an office evaluation is appropriate.

How evaluation begins

Chest Pain Is Screened Before Musculoskeletal Care

Do not assume that pain near a rib is a joint or muscle problem. New, severe, unexplained, pressure-like, or spreading chest pain—especially with shortness of breath, sweating, faintness, nausea, or jaw or arm symptoms—requires emergency medical care.

What to Know Before Choosing Care

02

What a Non-Emergency Evaluation May Cover

For a medically appropriate presentation, the provider may ask about impact, coughing, lifting, twisting, exercise, pain with breathing, skin changes, fever, and prior chest or heart problems. The examination may include breathing mechanics, trunk motion, posture, and localized tenderness.

03

Care Depends on What Has Been Ruled Out

If the concern is appropriate for conservative care, recommendations may address thoracic movement, breathing mechanics, soft tissues, activity modification, or rehabilitation. The office should refer rather than treat when the history or examination suggests a fracture, lung, heart, infection, or other medical concern.

04

Monitor Breathing and Systemic Symptoms

Worsening shortness of breath, coughing blood, fainting, blue or gray color, fever, spreading redness, or escalating chest pain changes the urgency. These symptoms should be assessed medically rather than monitored through a routine musculoskeletal visit.

Safety first

New or Uncertain Chest Pain Belongs in Emergency Care

Call 911 for new, severe, unexplained, pressure-like, or spreading chest pain—especially with trouble breathing, sweating, faintness, nausea, weakness, or jaw or arm symptoms. Do not wait for a routine appointment.
