Workers’ compensation care

Return-to-Work Programs

Returning to work too soon, or without the right restrictions in place, is one of the most common reasons a workplace injury becomes a repeat injury.

Returning too cautiously, on the other hand, can mean unnecessary time away from work and income. Getting this balance right requires a plan built around your actual job demands, not a generic timeline.

Getting Back to the Job Safely — Not Just Quickly.

How We Build Your Return-to-Work Plan

We start by understanding the physical demands of your specific job — the lifting, reaching, standing, or repetitive tasks it actually requires — not just your job title. From there, we track your functional progress against those specific demands, rather than against a generic recovery timeline that may not reflect what your job actually asks of you.

  • A functional assessment of your job’s physical demands
  • Clear, specific work restrictions rather than vague limitations
  • Regular reassessment and restriction updates as you progress
  • Coordination with your employer on modified or light-duty options where appropriate

Stages of a Typical Return-to-Work Progression

  • Initial restriction phase — protecting the injury while beginning treatment
  • Modified duty phase — returning to work with specific restrictions in place as function improves
  • Progressive duty phase — restrictions gradually lifted as strength and capacity are rebuilt
  • Full duty release — cleared to return to all normal job demands, confirmed through functional testing when appropriate

Why We Don’t Rush This Process

A patient who is cleared to return to full duty before they’ve actually rebuilt the capacity to handle it is at meaningfully higher risk of reinjury — which is worse for the employee, the employer, and the claim. We use functional benchmarks, not just pain levels or calendar time, to determine when each stage of return is appropriate.

Coordinating With Your Employer

We communicate specific, functional restrictions directly to your employer so modified duty assignments can be planned with confidence, and we update those restrictions as your recovery progresses rather than leaving your employer guessing about your current capacity.

The goal of every return-to-work plan we build is the same one behind everything else we do here: a genuine return to full capacity, not just a return to the building.
